SIR REG EMPEY – BALLYCASTLE/CAMPBELTOWN FERRY
Sir Reg Empey, MLA, Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Investment has said that urgent negotiations on the future of the Ballycastle/Campbeltown ferry have been continuing and that he has been in discussions with Brian Wilson, Scotland Office Minister.
The Minister said: "In a last ditch attempt to save the ferry service for this year, negotiations have been going on with Moyle District Council, Argyll and Bute Council and the Scottish Executive.
"Following my discussions with the Scotland Minister, Brian Wilson, I am prepared to match funding now being proposed by the Argyll and Bute Council to ensure that the service can continue this year and in the hope that it may be there for the future.
"The ferry service has been running for the last three years in the summer season and it would be tragic if it was to end. I am hopeful that if the additional funding can be put in place, the company will be in a position to promote the service for the 2000 season."
