WHITEMOUNTAIN QUARRIES LTD FINED FOR POLLUTION

Whitemountain Quarries Ltd, Sheepwalk Road, Lisburn was fined at Lisburn Magistrates Court yesterday for pollution of a landfill site.

An Environment and Heritage Service (EHS) officer discovered serious pollution in the Derriaghy River on 5 April 2006. The river was brown in colour and was visibly polluted for approximately 2 kilometres. The source of this pollution was traced upstream to a landfill site at Mullaghglass Road, Lisburn, operated by Whitemountain Quarries Ltd. Analysis of samples taken at the landfill site confirmed that the effluent escaping from it was seriously polluting.

The company pleaded guilty in court and was fined £750, plus analysis costs of £123.81 and court costs of £20.
