STRABANE MAN FINED £ 3,000 FOR WASTE OFFENCES

Mr Girdharilal Sharma (68) of Derry Road, Strabane, Co Tyrone, was fined a total of £3,000 for offences at Strabane Magistrates’ court today for breaches of waste management legislation.

Following complaints, Environment and Heritage Service officers investigated the landfill site at Park Road, Strabane on 6 and 7 April 2005. It was established that controlled waste had been deposited on the site, contrary to the site’s licence conditions. Mr Sharma pleaded guilty to two charges relating to the Waste and Contaminated Land Order 1997.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Mr Sharma pleaded guilty to two offences and was fined under the following:

(i) Breach of Licence Condition 1(c) and Article 4(6) of The Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997. The charge related to the treating keeping or disposing of controlled waste contrary to condition 1(c) of the site’s waste management licence.

(ii) Breach of Licence Condition 1(g) and Article 4(6) of The Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997. The charge related to the treating keeping or disposing of controlled waste contrary to condition 1(g) of the site’s waste management licence.
