POLLUTION COSTS CO DOWN FARMER £1,300
Mr John Geoghegan of Leganny Road, Loughbrickland, Co. Down was fined £1,000 today at Banbridge Magistrates Court for pollution offences.
The Environment and Heritage Service discovered slurry overflowing from a defective slurry tank at Mr Geoghegan's farm seeping to a nearby stream on 22 July 2005. A nearby cess pool was found to be overflowing and running to the stream also. This stream is a tributary of the Newry River and pollution was caused for approximately one mile downstream. Samples of the escaping effluents were taken and later analysis confirmed that they were highly polluting.
Mr Geoghegan pleaded guilty in court, and was fined £1,000 plus analysis costs of £265.48 and court costs of £46.
