LONDONDERRY MAN FINED £6,000 FOR WASTE OFFENCES

James McGonnellogue of Groarty Road, Londonderry was fined a total of £6,000 at Londonderry Magistrates' court today for waste management offences.

On 25 March 2004, Environment and Heritage Service officers investigated a site off Whitehouse Road, Londonderry where a substantial quantity of waste foodstuffs, plastic containers, cardboard and tin cans were deposited along with excavated soils, metals and timber. During this inspection, there was evidence of burning of the waste foodstuffs.

Additional wastes were discovered during a further inspection on 4 February 2005.

Mr McGonnellogue pleaded guilty on the waste charges and was fined on six counts of £1000 and court costs of £166.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Two charges related to depositing controlled waste or knowingly causing or knowingly permitting controlled waste to be deposited in or on land without a waste management licence authorising the deposit. A further four charges related to keeping controlled waste, or knowingly causing or knowingly permitting controlled waste to be kept in or on land except under and in accordance with a waste management licence.
