GLENAVY COMPANY FINED £3,600 FOR POLLUTION

Ulster Farm By-Products of Ballyvannon Road, Glenavy, Co. Antrim, were fined £3,600 plus analysis and court costs yesterday at Antrim Magistrate's Court.

The court was told that the company has a treatment plant on their site to process their waste and this plant is regularly monitored by Environment and Heritage Service (EHS). On four different occasions within a period of four months (26 April 2005, 24 May 2005, 29 June 2005 and 7 June 2005) EHS officers found that effluent from the company's treatment plant was polluting the nearby Glenavy River. Analysis of samples taken on these dates confirmed that the level of pollutants in the effluent was up to 180 times greater than the maximum acceptable level.

The company pleaded guilty to causing pollution and said it had done all it could to remedy the pollution problems.

The company was fined £900 for each of the four instances of pollution (£3,600 in total), plus analysis and court costs totalling £742.52.
