STRABANE COMPANY FINED FOR WASTE POLLUTION

BH Glazing Ltd. of Newtown Place, Strabane was fined £1000 at Strabane Magistrates' court today for a breach of waste management legislation.

On 24 April 2004 PSNI officers identified waste being disposed in a sand pit off the Ardcame Road, Donemanagh. Strabane District Council attended the site and the investigation was progressed by Environment and Heritage Service officers. The inspection of the site revealed two lorry loads of plastic window frames, timber, rubble and metals being deposited on the site. The controlled waste was subsequently removed to a licensed site. BH Glazing Ltd. pleaded guilty on the waste charge and was fined on one count of £1000 and ordered to pay court costs of £34. The charges related the deposit of controlled waste on land without a waste management licence.

  2. Article 4(1)a of The Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997. The charge related to the deposit of controlled waste, or knowingly caused or knowingly permitted controlled waste to be deposited in or on land without there being in force a waste management licence authorizing the deposit.
