TOOMEBRIDGE MAN FINED £2,000 FOR WASTE OFFENCES

Mr Nelson Alexander, from Gloverstown Road, Toomebridge, was fined at Antrim Magistrates' Court yesterday for breaches of waste management legislation.

During February 2005, Environment and Heritage Service officers investigated an incident concerning illegal disposal of mixed demolition waste on agricultural lands owned by Mr Alexander at Church Road, Randalstown.

Mr Alexander was present in court and pleaded guilty. He was fined £1000 for each of the two offences under Articles 4(1) (a) and 4(1) (b) of The Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

  1. The controlled waste deposited on land at Church Road, Randalstown consisted of clay, demolished buildings including timber, concrete, plastic, metals and household furniture.
  2. Mr Alexander pleaded guilty to the offences and was fined £1000 for each offence under Articles 4(1)(a) and 4(1)(b) of The Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997: knowingly permitting controlled waste to be deposited on land without a waste management licence in force, and secondly, knowingly treating or keeping controlled waste on land except in accordance with a waste management licence, respectively.
