ANGELA SMITH SETS UP HOTLINE SUPPORT FOR BUYERS OF USED VEHICLES

Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, Angela Smith, MP, today issued a warning about forged and stolen log books being used to support the sale of stolen vehicles. The Minister also announced a new helpline for car buyers, which will be manned by the DOE’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Northern Ireland Agency (DVLNI).

Angela Smith said: "Due to DVLNI’s previous advice and police detections, the number of stolen vehicles being purchased by unsuspecting members of the public is reducing. However, the issue is still a matter for serious concern.

"I have therefore set up a telephone helpline (0845 6018574) for anyone buying a used vehicle. The helpline will provide the buyer the opportunity to check the information on the Northern Ireland log book against the details held on the DVLNI computer record for that vehicle. Additional support for car buyers is also available. My message is - if you are buying a used car be very careful."

DVLNI has produced a fact sheet outlining practical steps on how to avoid being sold a stolen vehicle, which should be taken before purchasing a used vehicle.

Always have sight of the log book (tax book) V5. Be satisfied that the seller owns the vehicle or is entitled to offer it for sale. Ask the seller for proof of identity.

View the vehicle at the address shown on the registration document. Be aware that some criminals have been known to rent property and sell vehicles from these premises.

Check the vehicle identification number (VIN) – sometimes called the chassis number – corresponds with the number on the Northern Ireland log book. This number can usually be found on a metal plate under the bonnet.

If you have limited knowledge of vehicles take an experienced person with you.

Be wary of handing over cash to someone who has been contacted through a mobile number.

Check if the vehicle has been seriously damaged, notified as stolen or is subject to outstanding finance. The following companies provide this service for a fee – Experian (Car Data Check) – 08706000838 and HPI Limited – 01722422422.

Contact the DVLNI help line on 08456018574 where details on the Northern Ireland log book can be confirmed and general advice given.
