SAM FOSTER HOSTS RECEPTION FOR DISTRICT COUNCILS

Sam Foster, MLA, Minister for the Environment, today hosted a reception in Parliament Buildings for the Mayors and Chairmen of Northern Ireland's twenty-six district councils.

Since the elections in June of this year, twenty three of the twenty six councils have new mayors/chairmen.

In welcoming the guests, who included district council Chief Executives, the Minister paid tribute to the commendable work that is done at local level.

He said: "Councils continue to work in harmony, and in partnership, with central government and with other public service providers, voluntary organisations and the business sector to deliver quality services within their districts.

"I would like to congratulate Chief Executives and council staff for their dedication and professionalism in keeping local services running, even during difficult periods.

"District councils will continue to make a vital contribution to the delivery of accountable local services, working in partnership with DOE and others in taking forward the programme of modernising local government."
