SAM FOSTER RAISES THE BLUE FLAG AT PORTRUSH AND PORTSTEWART BEACHES
Environment Minister Sam Foster today raised the coveted European Blue Flag at Portrush East and West Strands and Portstewart Beach.
The possession of a 'Blue Flag' has become a matter of prestige for coastal resorts highlighting that they are attractive, safe and clean. This is the eighth year in a row that Portrush West has received one, the fourth year for Portrush East and the third year for Portstewart.
Commenting on the award, Mr Foster said: "I congratulate Coleraine District Council and The National Trust on their excellent achievement. This coveted award requires considerable investment in beach management and facilities. The beaches at Portstewart and Portrush are very attractive, safe and clean. I hope that many tourists will visit them over the course of the summer."
In highlighting the benefits of the award for the community, Mr Foster said: "Indeed I would strongly encourage all coastal authorities to apply for the Blue Flag. This award must certainly make a positive contribution in promoting tourism and in turn, economic growth in coastal resorts."
Mr Foster concluded by saying that he was pleased with the overall compliance rates with the Bathing Water Directive standards in Northern Ireland. However, he warned against complacency in maintaining these high standards.
