RE-APPOINTMENT OF NON-EXECUTIVE MEMBERS OF THE ENTERPRISE ULSTER BOARD

The Department for Employment and Learning today announced that the term of office of the Chairman and three members of the Board of Enterprise Ulster is to be extended by a further 18 months.

Following a review of this statutory body, Mr Joseph Cowan, Mrs Sylvia Butcher, Mr William Cameron and Mr James Collins have agreed to remain as Board members for a further 18 months. The extensions will take effect from Tuesday, 1 March 2005.

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Enterprise Ulster was established as a Public Corporation under the Enterprise Ulster (Northern Ireland) Order 1973. Its original function was amended under The Industrial Training (Northern Ireland) Order 1990 and its statutory purpose now is creating, or providing training for, employment in Northern Ireland. (From 1 October 2001 Enterprise Ulster commenced piloting the new Training for Work programme).

In accordance with the 1973 Order, the Board of the Corporation should consist of a Chairman, appointed by the Minister and not less than seven or more than eleven other members, also appointed by the Minister. Board members receive a fee of £140 for days when they attend Board Meetings.

Other members of the Board are Ms Anne Rutledge, Miss Alice Quinn and Mr James Cooper.

Mr Joseph Cowan trained as a teacher before entering the Civil Service in 1974 as a Deputy Principal. He held various posts in the Department of Environment for Northern Ireland before his retirement in 1998 as Deputy Secretary for Urban Regeneration throughout Northern Ireland. He was appointed Chairman of the Enterprise Ulster Board from 1 March 1999 to 28 February 2002 and re-appointed from 1 March 2002 to 28 February 2005.

Mrs Sylvia Butcher, after a 30 year teaching career, is owner/manager of a small business designing and manufacturing greeting cards and stationery. She was appointed to the Board of Enterprise Ulster from 1 March 1999 to 28 February 2002 and re-appointed from 1 March 2002 to 28 February 2005.

Mr William Cameron entered the Northern Ireland housing sector in 1955. He held various posts in the NI Housing Trust and the NI Housing Executive before his retirement in 1998. He was awarded an OBE in 1993 for his services to housing. He has been a member of the Board of Enterprise Ulster since 1 March 1999.

Mr James Collins retired from the Ford Motor Company after 31 years service, spending his last nine years as General Manager. He has been a member of the Board of Enterprise Ulster from 1 March 1999.

None of these appointees have undertaken any significant political activity during the last five years.
