APPOINTMENT OF MEMBERS TO BOARD OF GOVERNORS OF ST MARY’S UNIVERSITY COLLEGE
The Department for Employment and Learning today announced the appointments of four new members to the Board of Governors of St Mary’s University College.
They will be replacing the current Department for Employment and Learning appointees, Mrs Maureen Thatcher, Mrs Vivienne Boyle, Mr Charles MacCreanor and Mrs Linda Moore, who will be retiring from the posts after their second term of service on the Board of Governors.
Paying tribute to the outgoing Governors, the Minister for Employment and Learning, Barry Gardiner, MP, said: "I would like to thank outgoing members for their service and dedication. Their efforts have aided the smooth running of the college and I wish them all well for the future."
The new members are: Mr Sean Mahon, Mr Patrick McAllister, Dr Philip Johnston and Dr Celestine Devlin.
NOTES TO EDITORS:
- The appointments have been made in accordance with the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments for Northern Ireland’s Code of Practice.
- The current constitution of the Board comprises 18 members. The Department of Education also nominates an assessor to the Board.
- St Mary’s University College is a co-educational College, under Roman Catholic management. It is concerned mostly with the initial teacher education of teachers for primary schools. It does, however, have some secondary sector students and also provides some in-service teacher education. The College has, since September 2000, entered into diversified provision outside teacher education.
- Mr Mahon is a business manager in the University for Industry, an educational charity. He is also a Non Executive Director in the Central Services Agency, DHSSPS.
- Mr McAllister is the Principal of St James’ Primary School in Tandragee and a former teacher of St Mary’s Primary School, Banbridge.
- Dr Philip Johnston is the Head of the Department of Spanish in University College, Dublin.
- Dr Celestine Devlin is a tutor for the Open University and former Principal of St Louis Grammar School, Kilkeel.
- No political activity was declared by the appointees.
