VISIONARY FORESIGHT OPENS ACCESS TO EDUCATION – FARREN
Minister for Employment and Learning, Dr Sean Farren has attended the signing of a major new Partnership Agreement between Queen’s University Belfast and Armagh College of Further and Higher Education and Omagh College of Further Education.
This unique partnership is aimed at widening access to higher education in Northern Ireland and builds upon the co-operation that already exists between the two colleges and Queen’s University.
Speaking at the event Minister Farren said: "I am encouraged by these links, established some ten years ago initially between Queen’s and Omagh College then further reinforced with the establishment of the Queen’s campus in Armagh in 1995. Partnerships between colleges and universities can open up fresh opportunities for students.
"With the provision of Access courses encouraging progression to degree level study you have demonstrated clear support for the concept of Life Long Learning. I am very aware that your visionary foresight at this time, opened up access to higher education for local people from all walks of life.
"By offering foundation modules locally you provided an environment in which you have addressed students’ learning and practical needs, instilling the confidence necessary to progress and to fulfil their potential.
"For mature students, family life, responsibilities and commitments can impact on learning and as Minister for Employment and Learning I am committed to breaking down such learning barriers. The effective utilisation of existing resources in such a way is very encouraging.
"Your genuine and tangible commitment to developing and strengthening your relationship must be commended along with your commitment to ongoing support for industry, business and the community which augurs well for developments in the future."
