NEW DEAL HAS ITS FOUNDATIONS SET IN STONE

"Through the Training and Employment Agency’s New Deal I was given the opportunity to work with Enterprise Ulster and learn the art of stone masonry. I enjoyed the work and made a lot of new friends in the process – so for me literally speaking - it killed two birds with one stone," says Kevin Fitzsimmons from Downpatrick.

Kevin is only one of a number of New Deal participants who have been involved at the Gallow’s Hill project, Downpatrick, which has been supported and funded by Down District Council, since it began in September 1999.

Gallow’s Hill played an important part in the history of Downpatrick, as it was the main place for executions during the 18th Century. Now the site is helping to axe unemployment in the local area by developing construction skills as pathways, stone walls, a viewing point, entrance features and a drainage system are gradually put in place.

Kevin who has always had a keen interest in stone work says: "I had investigated the possibility of setting up my own business in this field but unfortunately there was insufficient funding. Working on the Gallow’s Hill project will equip me with the necessary skills I need to pursue this as a career."

Jennifer Patterson, Personal Adviser at Downpatrick JobCentre has noticed a visible change in Kevin. She says: "Kevin’s participation in the Gallow’s Hill project has enhanced his self-confidence, motivation and skills in this field. Indeed, Kevin’s enthusiasm and contribution throughout earned him a place on Enterprise Ulster’s Main Stream Programme to continue his training."

Bill Radcliffe, Area Manager, Enterprise Ulster, believes there are numerous advantages for all concerned: "The project has many benefits. New Deal participants are able to learn new construction skills, which will widen their skill base and make them more employable in the construction industry. While local people will benefit from a new amenity and improved environment which can be further developed through integration with other famous sites in the town."
