PARTNERSHIP IS KEY TO FUTURE SUCCESS FOR LIMAVADY - FARREN
"Limavady and its surrounding districts have a key role to play in both the future economic and educational well-being of the North-West. The ongoing co-operation between the Limavady college and local industry points the way to how best partnership meets current and changing demands in both these sectors," Minister of Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment, Dr Sean Farren said today.
Minister Farren was speaking at a visit to Limavady College of Further and Higher Education, where he officially opened the newly refurbished reception area and office accommodation.
Dr Farren visited the Engineering department where he met a number of Seagate Technology employees who have successfully completed an Engineering Bridging course and the National Certificate in Engineering. Both courses have been developed and customised by the college to meet the company’s requirements.
The company in recognition of the support given to the local Seagate plant to update the workers’ skill base in technical areas presented a cheque to the college.
During his tour of the facilities the Minister also met with staff and students in a number of other departments. These included the Business Support Unit, Community Education Unit, futuristic Learndirect Computer Centre and the School of Art and Design, which offers a wide range of courses including the Diploma in traditional crafts.
Speaking about his visit Minister Farren said: "I have been extremely impressed by what I have seen here today. Whilst the infrastructure is important it is also crucial to remember that the quality of the education and training is vital and that the professionalism of the staff is the key to success. The college here in Limavady typifies all of these vital qualities.
A positive relationship between FE colleges and industry is vital to the growth of the economy in terms of defining and meeting local skills needs. Such links are very much in evidence in Limavady and they are to be encouraged. "
