FURTHER EDUCATION AND TRAINING UNDERPINS ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

"Further education and training has a major role to play in supporting social inclusion, as well as assisting the development of a knowledge-based economy in which there will be worthwhile opportunities for all our people," Dr Sean Farren, Minister for Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment, said today.

Addressing a US trade delegation currently on a fact-finding mission to Northern Ireland, Dr Farren said: "Our education and training system is providing individuals with the skills and experiences necessary for both self-fulfilment and career progression. It is also working to ensure the availability of the type of skills being demanded by business and industry.

"Encouraging progress is being made towards the goal of a dynamic and knowledge-based economy with greater employment opportunities for our people, particularly in areas of greatest social need.

"I am confident that Northern Ireland has a lot to offer in supporting companies seeking to locate here. I hope we can build upon these links in a meaningful way that will deliver practical benefits to our respective colleges, businesses, economies and our people."

The delegation included business representatives and educationalists from the Carolinas as part of a visit organised by the Larne Economic Development Company (LEDCOM).

The objective of the mission is to explore opportunities for trade and investment between Northern Ireland and USA. During their stay, they will establish links with local companies and education and training providers. East Antrim Institute of Further and Higher Education already has strong links with the York Technical College in South Carolina as partners in the Wider Horizons Programme.
