FARREN VISITS NORTH WEST INSTITUTE
"The North West Institute has a major role to play in the economic and educational development of the North West region," the Minister of Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment, Dr Sean Farren, said this morning.
Speaking during a visit to the Institute in Derry, the Minister said: "Since taking office I have repeatedly stressed the central role which the further education sector has to play in developing a vibrant and inclusive economy which Northern Ireland needs.
"That is why I ensured the FE sector was covered in my recently announced proposals for student support arrangements and why I have invested extra money in the sector over the last twelve months.
"The North West Institute has developed very strong local and international linkages which are of benefit to Derry and indeed Northern Ireland as a whole. The Institute is giving students the chance to gain the skills and knowledge they need, while playing an equally vital role in contributing to local cultural, social and economic development.
"I know that the Institute is looking to the future to ensure its services are improved even further. That is why I am here today, to meet staff and students in their own environment and to learn about their ideas and to hear at first hand how they plan to continue to contribute to the development of the region."
The Minister was welcomed to the Institute by Peter Gallagher, the Director. During his visit he met and chatted with staff and students and held a meeting with the Governors, with whom he discussed a range of issues.
