STUDENT BODIES PRAISED FOR WORK IN COMBATTING SECTARIANISM
"The National Union of Students and Union of Students in Ireland have made a vital contribution towards ensuring a non-sectarian environment at our universities and colleges," the Permanent Secretary of the Department of Higher and Further Education, Training and Employment, Mr Alan Shannon, said today.
Speaking at a conference organised by the National Union of Students/Union of Students in Ireland (NUS/USI) to promote equality and diversity in tertiary education,
Mr Shannon said: "All students, including those in Northern Ireland, have the right to expect their universities and colleges to provide a safe, understanding environment in which diverse backgrounds and traditions can be equally respected.
"That, of course, is often easier said than done, especially given the nature of our history. However, with the help of NUS/USI, our tertiary education sector has worked hard to promote equality and mutual understanding on campus.
"The measure of their success can be seen in the numbers of people going through their doors and achieving qualifications. That is not just good for the individuals and institutions involved, it is good for the whole of our society."
The conference, on the theme 'Promoting Equality and Diversity in Tertiary Education – a 21st Century Investment', is being held in the Wellington Park Hotel, Belfast.
