EDUCATION MINISTER VISITS HIS FORMER SCHOOL
In his first official engagement since taking office last week the Education Minister, Mr Martin McGuinness MP, went back to visit the first school that he attended. The Minister met staff and pupils at Saint Eugene’s Primary School at Francis Street, Derry, this morning before travelling to Belfast for his first week of business in the new Department of Education.
He was welcomed by the current headmaster, Mr Leo Simpson, who reminded him of the school’s history. Built in 1914 it was formerly known as Saint Eugene’s Convent Infant School and catered for children up to eight years old.
The Minister said:
"I thought it was appropriate to make my first visit as Minister to the first school that I attended. I am very much on a learning curve again as I take on the challenges of my new post."
