ENROLMENTS AT SCHOOLS AND IN FUNDED PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION IN NORTHERN IRELAND 2002/03
Key points
Funded pre-school education
There are 21,076 children in funded pre-school education: 14,092 in nursery schools or nursery classes in primary schools; 1,180 in reception classes/groups; and 5,804 in funded places in voluntary and private pre-school education centres. In 1997/98 there were 11,116 children in funded pre-school education.
The reported religion of children in pre-school education is: 48.1% Roman Catholic, 33.0% Protestant, 1.5% Other Christian, 0.3% Non Christian, and 17.1% Other/No Religion/Not recorded.
Grant-aided Schools
Some 15,695 pupils (4.7% of the total enrolment in primary and post-primary schools) attend integrated schools. In 1997/98 enrolment at integrated schools was 8,154.
Some 1,903 pupils attend Irish Medium schools. In 1997/98 the figure was 1,247.

Grant-aided Schools
- In the post-primary phase, 40.5% of pupils attend grammar schools. In 1997/98 the proportion was 40.7%.
- Of post-primary schools, 27.2% are single sex. 46.5% of grammar schools are single sex, whereas 18.9% of secondary schools (non grammar) are single sex.
- Some 21.6% of pupils in primary schools are entitled to free school meals, as are 29.4% of pupils in secondary (non-grammar) schools and 7.3% of grammar school pupils.
- The reported religion of pupils is: 50.5% Roman Catholic, 41.1% Protestant, 1.4% Other Christian, 0.3% Non Christian, and 6.7% Other/No Religion/Not recorded.
